Beats Me, Claude

by Nixon, Joan Lowry. (Viking, 1986 ISBN 0670807818. Out of Print.) Picture Book. 32 pages. Grades 2+.
This book was reviewed by Carol Otis Hurst in Teaching K-8 Magazine.

Shirley and Claude, who appear in several of Nixon's books, have settled in East Texas where Claude is happy but Shirley is lonely. When Tom, an orphan, turns up at the door, Shirley wants to keep him and it takes all her wiles, a bank robber, a pseudo-preacher and army deserters, and several apple pies to bring Claude around to her way of thinking.
